How to Add Pattern to Your Walls (Without It Screaming at You)
This is for the people who are just starting their journey to color and pattern and maximalism!
Pattern doesn't have to mean that wild floral wallpaper that your grandmother had or that too kindergarten vibe mural your neighbour did on their garage door. There are sneaky, subtle, and downright clever ways to bring pattern into a space — and the best part? You probably already have everything you need to start.
The sneakiest pattern of all, glossy paint!
Gloss paint on matte, same colour. Yep, that's it.

The pattern only shows up subtly with light, and only from certain angles. It's like a little secret your wall is keeping. In this wall I used High Gloss Aquanamel paint that I had left over from painting a door and an architrave but you could also use high gloss varnish as a cheaper alternative for the same effect!

Want something a touch more visible? Try paint a pattern in just slightly darker or lighter tone than your wall so it's not shouting at you. In this brick wall, I added a warm beige checkered pattern. Because it's so soft, it just hums in the background. Suddenly the wall has personality without stealing the show.

And that's it! Adding pattern on your walls doesn't have to be scary, it just has to be a little thoughtful. Trust what feels good and remember: it's just paint, not the end of the world.
Now go add some pattern to your home. ✨
